Dealing With Job Loss

Phoebe Johnson

Losing your job is never going to be easy, no matter the circumstances. It’s likely you’ll be overwhelmed by feelings of shock, sadness or worry regarding your finances, lifestyle and possibly your mental health. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a horrible experience, but even the darkest clouds have a silver lining. At GCB recruitment, we’re here to support you, so here are our tips for picking yourself back up after losing your job.

Remain Cool, Calm & Collected

Just thinking about losing your job in any circumstance can stir feelings of shock, anger, sadness and even grief,  just to name a few. These are all perfectly normal and natural reactions to such a situation. However, these are not emotions you want to express to your workplace. As hard as that may be, letting your heart speak before your brain will not get you anywhere or could potentially land you in a harder situation than the one you are already in. The worst thing you can do is react irrationally, or even worse, take it online. Slandering your workplace on the internet is only going to land you in more hot water. So take your time, feel what you need to feel and then respond in a logical, rational manner to the situation.

However, this does not mean you should sit back and take it if you feel it's a case of unfair dismissal! Take the time to give yourself some headspace and assess the situation as it has happened before taking your next steps to avoid carrying any negative emotions or resentment with you.

Remember that your job doesn’t equate your value

Our careers can very often shape who we are, losing your job may make you feel as though you’ve lost a part of your identity. Remember that your job does not define you and you shouldn’t link your self worth to your workplace. Losing your job doesn’t make you any less of a person, it also doesn’t make your skillset any less valuable.  If you are good at what you do or want to learn something new then the world is still your oyster and you will find another workplace that is perfect for you. Take this time to reconnect with yourself and think about what you’re really good at, what makes you tick and how this can influence the next chapter of your life.

See the Silver Lining

This could be a golden opportunity for you. Take stock of how you are feeling and think on your experiences; underneath the disappointment and frustration of losing your job, do you feel any relief? There are lots of new and exciting possibilities out there for you. This could be the perfect time to reflect on your career to date and figure out what it is you really want to do with your life or even try something new. Now could be the time to take that leap of faith.
